THE FREELANCE CHRONICLES: 3 Ways To Avoid Faking The Funk

If you’re like me and as cut-and-dry as they come, faking ANYTHING is hard work. 

It just takes too much hassle… Not only do you have to keep up the ruse but, whatever you’re lying about more than likely will be tested some day. You now have to work harder than you would have if you were initially honest, just to not look like the fool you have now made yourself become.  The same is more than true for lying about skills you don’t have to clients.  Now, please don’t think that yours truly has ever gone down that road- everything I advertise about my services are things I’m proven to be skilled at and have been formally hired to do by employers. But not all skills are conventional, and the current economy is finally beginning to welcome skills not pedigreed or received by formal education. THERE IS NO LONGER A NEED TO LIE.

I have witnessed webinar-selling youtubers recommend “fluffing up” skills to potential clients and suggestions of learning on YouTube in the meantime for getting base knowledge…. Wow- this is horrible business advice!   The only one that notion positively affects is the person who assumes that you will be giving them more views on their YouTube by telling you to take up strictly learning on that platform.  Being a freelancer means that one misstep can cost you both financially and ethically; there is no need to pay that price.  If one truly wants to gain repeat ongoing customers, lying about what you can provide is not the way, here are 3 efficient alternatives:

1.  Treat each client like they’re the only client you’ll ever get. It’s pretty simple, customer service is always key.

2.  Do the due diligence to not only advertise your services accurately, but deliver quality products and services with integrity. Your business will leave a lasting impression just because of the value you brought the client with the skills you utilize to complete the task/project the asked of you.

3.  Don’t ever lose sight of who you are ethically to take opportunities you’re not ready for.  It’s not worth the business woes and loss of public trust. You also are better than that.

The right client will be more than accepting of your admittance to not being fully experienced in any industry and will likely give you slack- I promise. Honesty has positives that surprise you.
